Final gather pass for SPPM

Description

Hi

SPPM has got some issues in order to become really useful, at least the non-focused diffuse photon map component. The main issue is lack of predictable behaviour, it does converge well in some cases but it does not converge very well in many others with no apparent reason, even if a huge amount of passes is used. I don't know whether it could be possible but maybe one solution for solving current SPPM lack of predictable behaviour could be using a final gather interpolation pass on top of it, so we combine more coherent results and lower RAM footprint produced with SPPM with final gather powerful interpolation capabilities. The final gather sampling could be done also progresively for each photon map pass.

Hello, Álvaro.

Do you have any examples of non-convergent SPPM that you could send me?

I also think final gathering over sppm would be great. I will try to reproduce what he says if I can.

What I've seen with sppm is that sometimes it's not possible to remove the photon clouds easily on surfaces. Let's see if today I'm able to post some samples.

I will postpone for now any potential integrator improvements to focus on materials for the next months.
